Liverpool vs. Wolves KO 3.00 pm

Liverpool and Wolves have been on the same trajectory this season. After a great start to the season which saw both teams take 7 points from the first three games, the rails seem to come off rather dramatically for both teams with Liverpool somehow losing to Stoke and self imploding against Tottenham, whilst Wolves have also lost to Tottenham and were dismantled against a Joey Barton inspired QPR.  However both teams had good wins in the Carling cup with Liverpool overcoming a potentially tricky away game to Brighton 2-1, and Wolves thrashing Millwall 5-1.

A lot of questions have been asked in the media since Liverpool’s defeat to Tottenham whether Dalglish has still actually got what it takes to take Liverpool back to the top four.  After such hysteria from there excellent closing form last season and huge sum’s spent in the summer, expectations were always going to be high.  It has to be accepted that Dalglish simply got it wrong tactically last week playing Carroll ahead of Kuyt upfront with Suarez and leaving Enrique exposed on the left by having both Downing and Henderson
playing on the right.  Also while Tottenham were the better team it would not have finished 4-0 with 11 or 10 players on the pitch.

Wolves and McCarthy have carried themselves well during the summer signing the excellent Johnson from Birmingham at CB whilst also keeping hold of Jarvis who will surely be a key player again this season. Where they will struggle again is upfront already drawing two blanks this season, with 62 shots and only 20 on target.

Stats Zone Analysis

Coates vs. Doyle

Liverpool have a much better flow with Suarez and Kuyt playing together.  Add to that a free running Bellamy Wolves will have to be at their most disciplined in and around the box, ensuring they don’t give space for Bellamy or Suarez to run onto a ball or to give fouls away in and around the area.  If Liverpool can build on Wednesday I would expect this combination to win them the game.

Head to Head Coates vs. Doyle

Key Combination

Bellamy, Suarez and Kuyt

After Wednesday’s performance against Brighton I would expect Dalglish to keep these three together.  As mentioned before Liverpool have a much better flow with Suarez and Kuyt playing together.

Kuyt and Suarez link up play

Decisions, Decisions

I fully expect Carroll to make an appearance today against a  physical Wolves.  This will be an  important game for Carroll who has come under a lot of unnecessary stick mainly down to his price tag.  Liverpool need to play to his strengths i.e. on the floor to his feet and not just lump it.  If it’s still 0-0 and Carroll comes on to act as a more direct option this may ironically play into Wolves hands.

Conclusion

This is an important game for both to get back to winning ways. Wolves will be happy with point but Liverpool will be playing for all 3
which will leave them exposed at the back and if plan 1 doesn’t work will plan B Carroll work? Liverpool to win!
